Abstract

Simulation experiments are central to the study of complex systems, yet their structure and results are often described in an ad hoc manner. This limits the ability to systematically conduct, analyze, and reuse different experiments and the properties derived from them. This paper presents a framework for representing simulation experiments via workflows and roles. In this framework, workflows capture the activities as well as control-flow and data-flow patterns underlying simulation experiment execution. These are enriched by a role-based classification to distinguish among different kinds of experimental outcomes based on the purpose of the experiment. A proof-of-concept demonstrates the specification of experiments for two different roles, along with the corresponding composite workflows and observed properties.
